08/26/2010 - San Diego, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Stephen Drew homered and matched a career- high with four runs batted in and Mark Reynolds also went deep in support of Ian Kennedy's seven shutout frames in Arizona's 11-5 drubbing of San Diego to salvage a three-game series.
Kennedy (8-9) allowed one hit, walked two and struck out a career-high 12 to help the Diamondbacks end a nine-game losing streak at Petco Park and win there for the first time since September 15 of last season.
Chris Young had two hits and also drove in four and Justin Upton went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI to lead a 16-hit attack for Arizona, which won for just a third time in its last 10 games.
Kevin Correia (10-9) was battered for nine runs on nine hits and a pair of walks over just 3 1/3 innings to take the loss for the Padres, who had their three-game win streak snapped.
Adrian Gonzalez hit a grand slam for San Diego, which saw its lead in the NL West reduced to six games over idle San Francisco.
Upton doubled with one out in the first and scored on a two-out single by Young off the glove of a diving shortstop Jerry Hairston, Jr. to give the Diamondbacks the early edge.
Kennedy issued both of his walks in the first inning when he struck out the side to avoid any damage. The only hit he yielded was a fourth inning single by Will Venable.
Gerardo Parra singled with two outs in the second before Kennedy walked and both runners came into score when Drew followed with a home run that just cleared the wall in right field.
Drew's ground rule double to center with one out in the fourth scored Parra to make it 5-0 and sent Kennedy, who had reached on a fielder's choice, to third base. San Diego brought the infield in and Upton poked a single to right to score Kennedy to push the lead to six and Drew to third. Kelly Johnson walked to load the bases and that spelled the end of the afternoon for Correia.
Tim Stauffer took over and was greeted by Young, who found the gap in left- center to clear the bases to extend the lead to 9-0.
Reynolds' two-run clout in the seventh made it 11-0 for the visitors.
San Diego finally broke through in the eighth inning against Sam Demel, who had taken over for Kennedy. Chris Denorfia singled and advanced to third on a Nick Hundley single and a groundout. David Eckstein then bounced back to Demel, who got Denorfia hung up in a rundown before catcher Miguel Montero's throw hit him in the upper body and allowed him to score, Hundley to move to third and Eckstein to reach second base. After a walk to Miguel Tejada, Gonzalez launched a grand slam to right to make it an 11-5 game.
Scott Hairston walked and that forced a pitching change as Esmerling Vasquez took over and calmed things down by striking out Venable and getting Chase Headley to line out to end the inning. Aaron Heilman tossed a scoreless ninth to finish the game.
Game Notes
Drew knocked in four runs in a game for the fourth time in his career...He last did so before Wednesday on June 7 against Atlanta...The nine earned runs allowed by Correia are the most by a San Diego starter since Justin Germano yielded 10 to the Astros on April 21, 2008...Correia is 2-2 against the D'Backs this season and 4-7 in his career over 22 games, including 13 starts...Venable and Gonzalez extended their hitting streaks to eight games, while Headley went 0-for-2 and lost a seven-gamer...The Padres have scored five runs or more in eight straight games...Injured San Diego hurler Chris Young threw 55 pitches in a simulated game Thursday in an attempt to return to the team before the season is over...He has been out of action since April because of a strained right throwing shoulder and likely would have to go on a rehabilitation assignment to the minor leagues before returning.
